Looking for a new job can be tough. There's a lot of competition. It's difficult to stand out when employers are interviewing tens or even hundreds of other candidates for the job you want or need. One simple way to set yourself apart and increase your chances of landing a job is to hand out mini-resumes to everyone you know or meet during your job search. Now, I'm not talking about giving people a copy of your standard 8 1/2 by 11 paper resume (don't try doing that at a party). No, I'm talking about giving them a condensed version of your resume on a simple business card - a mini-resume.

In this article, I'm going to do several things for you:
- I'll explain how to use mini-resume business cards to help you get your next great job. You'll be handing them out like candy to friends and relatives, neighbors, colleagues and business associates - anyone who might be in a position to help you find a job. You'll also be handing them out to your potential colleagues during job interviews and work place visits.
- I'm going to show you how to design your new mini-resume business cards quickly an easily using simple online tools. You'll be able to choose from hundreds of mini-resume templates for many different industries and occupations.
- Finally, since this is a site about saving you money, I'll show you how to get 500 FREE professionally printed mini-resume business cards for use in you job search (you just pay shipping and handling).
But before we get into all of that, let's look at an example of a mini-resume on a business card just to get an idea about what we're going to be talking about. Let's say your an accountant, your mini-resume might look something like this:

As you've probably noticed, I've left out some things that you would normally see on a standard business card (like the company name and address) and I've added some things unique to our mini-resume sample (like our experience level and previous job titles).
Using your Mini-Resumes to Get a Job
Now you're ready to put your new mini-resumes to work for you on your job hunt. First you want to hand a stack of mini-resumes out to all of your friends, relatives and neighbors. You'll instruct them to hand out your mini-resumes to people they know that might be looking to hire someone like you. When you are out of work or looking for a new job, the people you know best often want to help you, but may not know what to do. Letting them hand out your mini-resumes will make them feel like they are really doing something to help you out, which they are. Always take along a few extra mini-resume business cards when you go out - you never know when you might bump into someone at lunch or in a store who could hook you up with your next potential employer.
Most of the people you know genuinely want to help you find a job - make it easy for them and you will see good results!
Your next stack of mini-resumes should go to your colleagues and business associates (if you are not currently employed). They will know some of your skills and talents and can pass along your mini-resume to other potential employers that they work with. They will be much more comfortable accepting a few of your business cards with your mini-resume printed on them than they would be if you handed them a big stack of regular paper resumes. If they know you well, don't be surprised if they come back and ask for more of your mini-resumes to hand out!

Finally, you should always have a good supply of mini-resume business cards with you whenever you go on a job interview, attend a job fair or open house, or make a company visit. At most job interviews, you will be interviewed by several different people. Make sure every one of them gets one of your mini-resumes. If they do not offer you one of their business cards, ask them for it. Then hand them one of your mini-resume business cards in exchange. If they don't have a business card, give them one of your mini-resumes anyway. Giving potential co-workers your mini-resume business card will immediately identify you as a serious professional who knows how to make a good impression. And they will remember you. When a potential employer is discussing who to call back for a second interview, do you want to be the "one in the grey suit" or the "one who had those great business cards with his resume on them"?
A mini-resume has one big advantage over regular paper resumes - you don't have to write cover letters!
Designing your Mini-Resumes
We've talked about what a powerful tool a mini-resume can be in your job hunting arsenal, so now let's see how fast and easy it is to make your own mini-resume. I'm going to use the free online tools available from Overnight Prints to design our mini-resume business cards. If you click this link, you can follow along and design your own mini-resume right now.
First, we need to choose a template for our mini-resume card. One of the reasons I like Overnight Prints is that they have hundreds of free templates to choose from (you can even upload your own design if you want to). They also give you advanced editing features like changing fonts, colors and text sizes.

If you don't like any of the free templates on the left, just click on one of the category links on the right.

If you click on the "And Many More..." link, you'll get a page with all of the free template categories. For our accountant example above, I chose the Finance and then the Accounting templates categories. To move from one sample template page to another, just click the arrow buttons at the bottom of each template page. When you find a mini-resume template you like, just click it and you'll get the Enter Information page for that template. Here is the Enter Information page for our sample Accounting mini-resume template:

You'll notice that as you enter information into each template box, the big business card image on the right will show you what your information will look like on the completed business card. This makes it very easy to design your mini-resume and try different ways of entering your resume information.
Now notice where I entered the resume information. Just ignore the titles on the information boxes - you can put whatever information you want in any of the boxes on your mini-resume. For example, put your name into the Company Name box so that it appears prominently at the top of your mini-resume business card in a big font. If you want to skip a line like I did between the experience part of the mini-resume and the contact information, just leave the box blank.
Besides your name, desired position and a summary of your work experience, you should also include a phone number where you can easily reached (use a cell phone if you have one so that callers can leave you a voice mail message if you don't answer). You should also include a private email address (not one from your current employer). If you don't have a private email address, go to http://gmail.com and sign up for a free Google email account. You might want to set up a new Gmail account just from your job search - that way your job hunting emails won't get mixed in (and potentially overlooked) with your personal emails.
Professional Quality Makes a Difference
Ok, you've designed your powerful mini-resume cards and you're ready to hand them out to everyone you know to really put your job search into overdrive. What is the best way to get your great mini-resume design printed and onto actual business cards?
You might be tempted to try and print your mini-resume cards on your home printer, but you probably won't get the same quality as you would get from a professional printing company. Remember - job hunting is often about who stands out from the crowd and makes the the best impression.
Don't skimp or cut corners on your mini-resume cards!
Earlier I promised you I'd show you how get 500 FREE professionally printed mini-resume business cards for use in you job search for only the cost of shipping and handling (if you've been following along on the Overnight Prints site you probably already know the secret!). So here you go:
